 Poetry Compressor is an interne
t tool in progress developed in
  collaboration with Ted van Lie
shout on the occasion of the pr
 oject ‘digital poetry’ initiate
d by the Fonds voor de Letteren
  (Dutch Foundation for Literatu
re) and Waag Society. On May 17
2006, it was presented at the
 Theatrum Anatomicum Amsterdam.

 Poetry Compressor has been crea
ted to analyse pieces of text a
 nd systematically re-arrange ch
 aracters and text elements. The
  application’s processing is ba
 sed on the so-called run-length
encoding, in which runs of dat
a are compressed by first clust
 ering similar patterns and seco
 ndly replacing long strings of
 identical information units wit
 h shorter ones.

 The compressor is also provided
with a responding diagram to pi
 cture the amount of characters
used in the text and by this vi
sualise the applied level of co
 mpression: the less black used
in the table, the higher the co
 mpression.
