Website www.landfall-project.info
The temporary art project 'Landfa
ll' by the artists Elodie Hiryczu
k and Sjoerd van Oevelen consists
of 10 large panorama billboards
with photographs of the youngest
island in the world, Surtsey in I
celand. The small island, which i
s of equal size as the financial
district Zuidas Amsterdam, has be
come a protected area since its d
iscovery, and is only accessible
for the purpose of scientific res
earch.
Hiryczuk and Van Oevelen reconstr
uct Surtsey to scale by placing t
he bill-boards according to their
original geographical positions.
In 2003 they were granted permis
sion to take pictures of the land
scape during a scientific expedit
ion.
The website contains selected tex
ts and images of the artists' exp
edition. It provides additional i
nformation on the art project; mo
re detailed documentation materia
l is made available when a respec
tive square in the map is selecte
d and enlarged. Step by step the
user zooms in or out of the topog
raphy of Surtsey.
The closer he gets, the more deta
ils he sees: the daily routes, th
e 10 locations of the panorama ph
otographs, the original GPS coord
inates and additional hotspots wi
th linked texts and images. Even
the sleeping tents, the storage h
ut and the landing platform of th
e helicopter have been considered
in the map.
A new way of combining new and ol
d media, a digital map that allow
s the user to access the target a
rea in different dimensions. The
grid becomes a scalable navigatio
n tool that filters the amount of
information.
