Interscape. Publication-Exhibition
Interscape proudly invites you to
attend the presentation of its pub
lication-exhibition at Stedelijk M
useum Bureau Amsterdam on January
8, 2004, 8 pm. The publication-exh
ibition is the result of an experi
mental student's workshop on curat
ing, initiated by the University o
f Amsterdam and the Sandberg Insti
tute, Amsterdam, led by Suzanne va
n de Ven.
Considering Interscape:
How to balance the relation betwee
n an exhibition context and presen
ted work? How to make an exhibitio
n into a coherent whole without ha
ving it turn introverted in a self
-referential way, but instead allo
wing it to maintain a potential fo
r self-criticism? The exhibition p
roject Interscape started off with
a critical examination of the fie
ld of contemporary exhibition maki
ng. In order to find some answers
to the formulated questions, a cho
ice was made return to the basis o
f any exhibition - its spatial and
temporal framework - and take it
as the point of departure for a pr
oject that wants to analyze and qu
estion fixed parameters.
Interscape, a neologism, composed
of a prefix and a suffix, suggesti
ng an 'inbetween', has taken the m
edium 'book' as its experimental e
xhibition platform. Constituting s
tructure for this platform is a 'm
atrix' - an archetypical notation,
originally derived from mathemati
cs to index content. Determining e
nough to provide a steady basis, a
nd simultaneously allowing for dif
fering contributions and intervent
ions, the code-structure of the ma
trix provides the 'exhibition-arch
itecture' that accommodates all pa
rties and elements involved in the
coming about of an exhibition.
Benoît Goupy, Roderick Hietbrink,
Arjan Janssen, Gert-Jan Prins and
Peter Stel were invited to make th
eir individual interventions in In
terscape's space. Usually working
on an 'in situ' basis with differe
nt media in a three-dimensional sp
ace, ranging from video and sound
to more physical installations, th
ey have conceived their work from
and within the fundamental matrix-
grid designed by Niels Schrader, c
hanging the given temporal and spa
tial parameters of Interscape as s
uch.
Completing its core-content with a
text by Domeniek Ruyters - who wa
s invited to write a 'pre-review'
of Interscape from the perspective
of a critic - and the curators' t
exts that were written in parallel
to the exhibition's concept, the
exhibition's elements have been co
ordinated into the matrix-grid, in
turn altering its appearance thro
ughout its trajectory. Integrated
within the space of the book toget
her with all other elements of the
exhibition's constellation as suc
h - its three advertisements in di
fferent magazines, its five 'bookm
ark-invitations' sent out to its a
udience, introduced by its initiat
ing institutes and waved goodbye b
y its advisor - Interscape became
what it now may be understood as:
an imprint of an exhibition trajec
tory as an exhibition in the shape
of a book. We've chosen to simply
call it a 'publication-exhibition
'; and hope it is something you wi
ll enjoy and will continue to enjo
y.
