Exploring noise and silence in the white cube
Silence, neutrality and contemp
lation. These are the attribute
s of a contemporary exhibition
space. Here, sound does not exi
st until generated by external
intervention.
Sound distribution measurements
within empty spaces often take
place by creating an initial s
ound impulse and examining the
rebound of tones. In a bare, ac
oustic environment like the whi
te cube, a similar approach cou
ld serve as a model for artisti
c research and analysis of spat
ial sound.
The audio-visual installation ‘
If paintings could talk’ was de
veloped for the 2008 museum wee
kend at Museum De Paviljoens to
explore its very own acoustic
patterns. For this the floor of
the museum was covered with go
lf balls. Then, with every step
a museum visitor incited the b
alls to scatter around and gene
rate sound. This allowed to rec
ord the spatial dimensions with
the help of microphones and su
bsequently process them into a
visual image.
